Visiting the Palais Garnier: What to Expect
Here’s how a typical visit unfolds — from the first steps into the rotundas to the golden sweep of the Grand Foyer:
Arrive at Place de l’Opéra and enter through monumental doors into vestibules framed by sculpture. The Grand Staircase rises ahead in marble and onyx, balconies curling like theater boxes. Follow the processional route upward — past columns, caryatids, and glowing lamps — to reach the foyers and salons, where mirrors multiply chandeliers into a galaxy of light.
When accessible, step into the auditorium to see crimson velvet and gold framing the great chandelier and the vibrant Marc Chagall ceiling. Elsewhere, discover the Grand Foyer’s painted vaults, the Rotonde du Glacier’s mosaics, and the museum‑library’s treasures. Take your time: this is a building designed for lingering, noticing, and being carried along by its theatrical rhythm.
